"The book is noted on the cover as a 'food and wine lover's guide' and it delivers. The tone is personal but informative, and the authors recommend specific wines to try and menu items to order."

Before you get into "downtown" Rutherford, Francis For Coppola's Niebaum-Coppola Estate is on your left. Do not turn west on Niebaum Lane. This is a road that does not lead to any wineries. Take the next left (west) off Highway 29 at the signs.

Flush with earnings from The Godfather, Eleanor and Francis Ford Coppola went to the Napa Valley to find a one-acre retreat, a place perfect for writing and creating. Instead they found this elegant estate, planted with vines in 1872 and acquired in the late 1870s by Finnish sea captain and Alaska fur trader Gustave Niebaum, who named the estate Inglenook. Niebaum's property was subdivided in 1969. Eventually, Heublein produced mass-market Inglenook wines in the winery facility. Coppola bought the Victorian estate home in 1975 and began to lust after the Inglenook Chateau to reunite the properties.

With Bram Stoker's Dracula profits, he paid most of the $10 million for the winery parcel in 1995, fulfilling his dream. The Coppolas turned the chateau into the Niebaum-Coppola Estate Winery and the Centennial Museum to showcase both the history of winemaking and Coppola's film career.

As you walk toward the chateau from the parking lot, you just know you have entered a movie set, complete with expansive walkways, decorative columns, and fountains. Once inside the heavy, cool building, notice the sweeping staircase made of exotic woods Coppola brought from Belize, where he owns a resort, Blancaneaux Lodge, in a remote rain forest. To the left facing the front of the building is a small shop, where you can buy a glass of wine, imported sodas, and apparel from both Niebaum-Coppola and Blancaneaux Lodge. The Coppola-concieved stained-glass window over the staircase depicts the historic estate's reunification.

As you turn right inside the main front doorway, a concierge can answer almost any question. Farther to the right are two large rooms full of wine tastes, excellent Coppola herbed olive oils and pastas, Italian ceramics, linens, candles, copperware, cigars and accessories, and the best selections of French and italian food books we have seen. We were struck with the warm elegance of the Belize woods in these two vast rooms, as well as with the casual friendliness of the entire Niebaum-Coppola staff. You are welcome to sit at long tables, sip wine, and enjoy the atmosphere and music, the latter of which comes from a player piano that sounds out songs written for The Godfather by Coppola's father, music publisher Carmine Coppola.

Wander through the entire building. Even the entrance lobby under the stairs has display cases full of Coppola family music and film awards, and an entertaining Coppola family tree. Be sure to pick up a copy of Coppola's Zoetrope: All Story magazine of short fiction, as well as a video or poster of Sofia Coppola's The Virgin Suicides movie.

Not incidental to all the movie jazz are some of America's finest vineyards and wines. Winemaker Scott McLeod (a well-known Italian name) received his B.S. in fermentation sciences at UC Davis and worked at Fattorie Isole e Olena in Tuscany's Chianti region and as a winemaker at Fattorie Badia a Passignano in Tuscany, Robert Mondavi, Cain Cellars, and Charles Shaw and now Niebaum-Coppola.

Fine points: Academy Award statues for Patton, The Godfather, and The Godfather, Part II, Coppola's 1948 Tucker from the film Tucker, Don Corleone's desk and chair from The Godfather, and Oscar-winning costumes from Bram Stoker's Dracula are all on display. Tasting fee $7.50, $20.00 for Reserves (you may keep the glass). Designated drivers receive nonalcoholic beverages. Featured wines: Niebaum-Coppola Estate wines, Blancaneaux Zinfandel, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Rubicon (mostly Cabernet Sauvignon), and Dolcetto; Francis Ford Coppola Diamond series including Bianco, Chardonnay, Merlot, Zinfandel, Claret, Syrah, Rosso, and Francis For Coppola Presents: Talia Rosé, Bianco, And Rosso. Owners: Francis and Eleanor Coppola. Winemaker: Scott McLeod. Cases: 40,000. Acres: 195 planted of 1,654.
