"The book is noted on the cover as a 'food and wine lover's guide' and it delivers. The tone is personal but informative, and the authors recommend specific wines to try and menu items to order."

Below are two sample winery entries from our Hill Guide to the Northwest Wine Country.  Hill Guides are the only guidebooks that include rarely revealed recipes from chefs and winemakers from each region. We want you to be able to recreate a favorite dish you experienced in your travels.  Check out our Sample Recipe, as well as our List of Recipes and List of Wineries.

David Hill Winery, formerly known as Laurel Ridge Winery, is one of the most beautiful, albeit hard to get to, winery sites anywhere. Lumberman Milan and Jean Stoyanov bought the property, the oldest licensed winery site in Oregon, in 1992, and took over the winery in 2000. In addition to the lovely Victorian on the property, the Soyanovs have now remodeled the winery and still offer the most breathtaking views of the Tualatin Valley. Laurel Ridge is now located in tiny Carlton, Oregon.

Fine points: Featured wines: Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Gewurztraminer, Pinot Gris, Riesling, Sauvignon Blanc, Muscat, Tawny Port, Muscat Port, Estate Muscat. Owners: Milan and Jean Stoyanov. Winemaker: Pascal Valadier. Cases: 6,000. Acres: 40.

David Hill Winery, 46350 NW David Hill Road, Forest Grove, OR 97116; phone: (503) 992-8545; Web; wwwldavidhillwinery.com. Open 12 noon-5:00 p.m. Tuesday-Sunday. Visa and MasterCard. Partly wheelchair accessible.

Hip Chicks Do Wine is truly the hip new fun winery in Oregon, and located in a warehouse in urban Portland. Wine Goddess Laurie Lewis and Wine Maven Renee Neely live by the premise that wine is supposed to be fun, which is why and how their home winemaking habit grew. After taking winemaking classes at Chemekta Community College, Renee worked part time at Duck Pond, and the both keep their day jobs in home care and coffee sales. Check it out, just for the heck of it, and some good wines aged in barrels bought used. Watch for the purple warehouse doors.

Fine Points: Featured wines: Vine Nombri (Belly Button wine), Shardoneaux (“not your mama’s Chardonnay). Owners and winemakers: Laurie Lewis and Renee Neely. Cases: 2,000. Acres: none.
