"The book is noted on the cover as a 'food and wine lover's guide' and it delivers. The tone is personal but informative, and the authors recommend specific wines to try and menu items to order."

Victoria & Vancouver Island-The Almost Perfect Eden, 4th Edition

Below is a sample winery entry in our Victoria & Vancouver Island guidebook.  Hill Guides are the only major guidebooks that include recipes from chefs and winemakers.  Check out our List of Wineries, Sample Recipe and List of Recipes for this book as well.

For the rest of British Columbia's wineries, try our Hill Guide to the Northwest Wine Country, which also includes Washington, Oregon, and Idaho.

Glenterra Vineyards is a terrific and tiny winery not on winery association maps and worth the entertaining visit. John Kelly and Ruth Luxton create wines in a garage-like building across the gravel driveway turnaround from their home. Ruth is an accomplished chef and Culinary Institute of America graduate who has cooked with John Ash in Sonoma County, California and now cooks locally at Livingston’s Café in Duncan.

To get to Glenterra take Cobble Hill Road southwest from the Trans Canada Highway and follow the signs.

John Kelly relies on files left to him by original owner John Harper, who started to grow grapes here after serving and sipping in Italy during World War II. Harper originally grew 42 grape varieties in 20 rows on one little acre at this site. Now Kelly has 4.5 acres planted of a total 17, and farms with organic fertilizers and no pesticides or herbicides.

As a testament to the quality of Glenterra’s limited estate grown 500 case production, their wines are available at the best restaurants in B.C., including the Wickaninnish Inn, The Aerie, Sooke Harbour House on Vancouver Island, and at Bishop’s in Vancouver.
